Video essays

I make video essays about movies. You can find most of them on my YouTube channel, max teeth. Here are a couple examples:

We're All Scrolling Through the World's Fair

Monstrum 7.2, December 2024

This essay is a collage of quotes and images related to Jane Schoenbrun's 2023 film We're All Going to the World's Fair. These materials are arranged on a fictional micro-blogging social media site, which I coded in HTML/CSS and Vue.js. I then "performed" the essay by screen-recording myself scrolling through the site.

The man/car gender binary

Self-published on YouTube, September 2023

Horror movies often problematize the simplicity of binaries. This video looks at the alternate man/car gender binary that emerges in John Carpenter's 1983 film Christine. This essay received a feature in the Best Video Essays of 2023 poll compiled by the British Film Institute's magazine, Sight & Sound.

I'm obsessed with this evangelical review of Hereditary

An unexpectedly personal essay about the surprises I found in a Christian media review of the horror film Hereditary (2018).
